In this insightful session, Stella Porto from the Inter-American Development Bank introduces MEiRA – a structured and forward-thinking framework that connects learning, recognition, and impact through the use of digital open badges.
🌟 What is MEiRA?
MEiRA stands for Monitoring, Evaluation, and Recognition of Applied Learning. It is designed to ensure that recognition is not limited to course completion, but instead extends across the learner’s entire journey — from knowledge acquisition to real-world application and impact.
The framework relies on three key digital badges, each representing a milestone:
1. Knowledge Badge
Recognizes the acquisition of knowledge after a formal learning activity (e.g. course, module, training).
2. Application Badge
Validates the learner’s personal commitment to apply the knowledge in a real-world context. This is supported by a documented action plan or intent to transfer.
3. Impact Badge
Acknowledges the actual impact of learning, demonstrated through a transfer story or tangible evidence of change, improvement, or success.
🧠 A Practical Example: Generative AI Training
Let’s imagine a training program on Generative AI tools like ChatGPT or DALL·E:
1️⃣ The learner earns a Knowledge Badge after completing an online course introducing these tools.
2️⃣ They receive an Application Badge by submitting a plan to integrate AI into their teaching or daily work.
3️⃣ Weeks later, they earn an Impact Badge by sharing a concrete result — such as time saved through automation or enhanced student engagement using AI-powered content.
✨ Why this matters
MEiRA moves beyond static certification. It empowers learners, documents meaningful progress, and enables organizations to track real impact. This is open recognition with purpose — dynamic, contextual, and learner-centered.
We strongly encourage training professionals, instructional designers, and credentialing innovators to watch the full presentation. It’s a powerful model for anyone seeking to build more transformative and evidence-based badge systems.
