FORTHEM (Fostering Outreach within European Regions, Transnational Higher Education and Mobility)  is a network of nine multidisciplinary public research universities in Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Romania and Spain. Green Sustainability is one of the main focuses of the FORTHEM Alliance which moves towards a sustainable and green European university. For this purpose, a Green Sustainability Unit has been made up of Academic and Administrative experts from each partner University as a central contact point for activities and requests concerning environmental sustainability within the Alliance. One of the objectives of this unit is to elaborate a common Code of Conduct, including teaching recommendations, which results from the review process of current practices and policy across partners University. Selected interns will have the opportunity to actively participate in this project, coordinated by an international team of experts.

Kriteerit

During the internship at the Green Unit of the Digital Academy Office of the FORTHEM Alliance, the recipient of this badge took part in a training program aimed at creating a map of green travel routes between the nine campuses of the Alliance to be included in the Code of Conduct.

This badge is awarded to Shani Weerasinghe in recognition of her valuable contribution to the FORTHEM Green Travel Grid initiative.

The student actively collaborated with fellow students from the FORTHEM Alliance and with the coordinators of the FORTHEM Green Sustainability Unit, dedicating a total of 20 hours to the project. Through effective teamwork and a strong commitment to sustainability, she produced high-quality materials aimed at promoting environmentally responsible mobility across the Alliance.

Overview of the Work Carried Out

As part of this activity, Shani prepared and documented green travel routes for the FORTHEM Green Travel Grid. Her work focused on the following routes:

Jyväskylä - Opole and Jyväskylä - Riga

For each route, she researched, compared, and documented four different modes of travel:

Air travel (plane) Rail transport (train) Long-distance bus Car travel

The comparison considered practical travel options and contributed to raising awareness of more sustainable travel choices within the FORTHEM community. Her work supports the Alliance's commitment to environmental sustainability and informed decision-making regarding mobility.
