The person who has obtained this badge

  • He/she has participated in the CSUC online course provided through UBIQUA platform of the UVic-UCC “Open Science Course of the Catalan Universities”. The lenght of the course is 50 hours, distributed in 5 modules.
  • He/ she has satisfactorily completed the activities and the tests.

Assignment criteria Completion of the proposed activities and correct answers to the questions in each module of the course.

Objectives

  • To understand open science and its implications, mission, and concepts.
  • To comprehend the evolution of information and communication technologies leading to this new paradigm, as well as the defense of open access to content and data.
  • To grasp the advantages of sharing research data (and for students to incorporate it into their own doctoral thesis projects).
  • To learn about research support services provided by the Catalan research system, in order to implement open science on a daily basis.
  • To know how to adapt the doctoral thesis project to open science from the management and design of research.
  • To understand the ethical and legal aspects of open science in general and open scientific publications and research data sharing in particular, including privacy, intellectual property, and reproducibility.

Activities

The contents of the course include:

  • Texts detailing the concepts and foundations of each unit.
  • Interviews with experts to provide additional context on the research.
  • A final podcast covering the present and future of open science.
  • A directory of resources that can be explored to gain in-depth knowledge of the subject, including the support services offered by centres and universities in regard to open science.
  • Additional bibliography for a better understanding of the evolution and scope of open science.
  • Self-assessment exercises to check the knowledge acquired.

The course is structured in four units:

  • Unit 1. Introduction to open science.
  • Unit 2. Open knowledge management: data, publications and infrastructures.
  • Unit 3. Legal and ethical aspects of research and education.
  • Unit 4. Citizen science and research assessment models.
  • Unit 5. Conclusion.
