Learning objectives/Outcomes

Throughout the course, the participant developed skills to:

  1. Analyze the implications of applying the Environmental and Social Performance Standard (ESPS) 3 on Resources Efficiency and Pollution Prevention for the different actors in project management, its relationship with other standards of the new framework, and its changes from the safeguards policy OP-703
  2. Define actions to promote the sustainable use of resources and avoid or minimize greenhouse gas emissions related to project management
  3. Define actions to avoid or minimize the generation of waste, as well as the risks and impacts related to the use of pesticides in project management
  4. Analyze the requirements and indicators necessary for the prevention of health and safety risks, according to guidelines and standards applicable in project management

Learning experience and activities

Self-paced course that includes:

  • Four modules with infographics, readings and videos outlining the main requirements of ESPS 3
  • One multiple-choice, assessment test for each module
  • One discussion forum

Content

This course has four modules that cover the following topics:

  1. Welcome and learning objectives
  2. General characteristics of ESPS 3
  3. ESPS 3 implementation process in the IDB project cycle; roles and responsibilities of stakeholders
  4. Roles and responsibilities in the loan life cycle according to ESPS 3
  5. Relationship of ESPS 3 with other standards, especially 1, 2 and 4.6
  6. Comparison of OP-703 and ESPS 3 in project management
  7. New requirements of ESPS 3 in the management of resources for the prevention and minimization of GHG emissions
  8. Most common GHG in IDB practices and quantification methodologies
  9. Examples of climate transition risk
  10. Socio-environmental impacts associated with the consumption of resources and efficient management strategies
  11. Reference standards on resource efficiency and pollution prevention and control techniques
  12. Impacts due to the release of agents or polluting activities in the ESIA / ESA / ESDD process
  13. Pollution remediation methods
  14. Solid waste management
  15. Hazardous waste management
  16. Management of hazardous materials (pesticides, living modified organisms, and genetically modified organisms)
  17. Applicable environmental and occupational health and safety (SSO) standards
  18. OHS Guidelines

Assessment 

Those who obtain the credential performed at least the following activities to complete the course:

  • Read the course content
  • Watch the proposed videos
  • Take four learning assessment tests with:
    • 80% correct answers (one quiz for each course module)
    • Three attempts to take each test, and guiding feedback after each attempt. The highest score is kept
    • Module evaluation following this structure:
      • Module 1 Exercises (20%)
      • Module 2 Exercises (30%)
      • Module 3 Exercises (30%)
      • Module 4 Exercises (20%)
