Getting to Zero Emissions with Building Energy Codes

Getting to Zero Emissions with Building Energy Codes

As the climate crisis worsens, we find ourselves building a Paris every month, and a Japan every year. Simply communicating ‘best-practice’ isn’t enough. To truly change the way we build, it’s time to combine global insights with local action. Our network has formed into powerful regional coalitions for change, and our network members are an important ingredient in creating large-scale impact. As such, we are committed to supporting and celebrating GBPN network members in facilitating big policy wins across the world through our recognition programs.

"Getting to Zero Emissions with Building Energy Codes" is a 2-hour course developed by Global Buildings Performance Network (GBPN). This GBPN Badge is issued when attendees complete the online course and its assessments successfully.

Criteria

This badge certifies the badge holder's participation and successful completion of the online course, Getting to Zero Emissions with Building Energy Codes.

The course is an introductory, self-paced, online course which takes approximately 2 hours to complete. It includes four modules with a knowledge check at the end of each module. The knowledge check consists of 3 to 8 multiple choice questions on the respective module content. To proceed to the next module, the learner needs to get at least 70-85% correct.

Successful participation in the course equips the learner to:

  • Describe the problem the Paris Agreement is addressing.
  • Explain why the building sector is important in addressing climate change.
  • Describe the role that building policy packages play in achieving zero emissions.
  • Define a building energy code.
  • Describe different types of building codes.
  • Describe some of the limitations of codes.
  • Describe the status of codes in the world.
  • Define net-zero emissions and zero emissions buildings.
  • Explain why it is important to consider the life cycle of a building when calculating carbon contribution.
  • List the three core requirements that must be met to qualify for net zero carbon.
  • List the four foundations of zero carbon building policies.
  • Describe some of the main benefits of buildings built to code.
  • Describe how building energy codes link to the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Describe best practices for developing building energy codes.
  • Describe the steps and actions in the policy pathway.
  • Explain why the effectiveness of a code is in how it is packaged with other policies.
  • Use strategies to overcome barriers to building efficiency.
