• Describe the origins of humanitarianism in the nineteenth and twentieth century. • Describe how humanitarian ideals and practices have changed over the last 200 years. • List the meanings of the term ‘humanitarianism’ and ‘internationalism’ in historical context. • Describe the role of humanitarianism in both challenging, and creating, global inequalities. • Identify the principles of ‘neutrality’, ‘impartiality’ and ‘independence’, and how far they have been upheld in past humanitarian action. • Use past humanitarian dilemmas to think about contemporary challenges facing the sector.
