This course will help international students at university whose first language is not English to develop their academic reading and writing skills. In particular, they will improve their ability to improve their ability to identify certain aspects of how academic language and skills are used to create meaning. The aim is to give students the tool to be able to navigate academic texts and breakdown different elements both micro and macro to enable to both read and writing more effectively. Areas include the skills of skimming and scanning, developing academic style, using language to create cohesion and coherence and identifying the differences between descriptive, analytical and evaluative language. At the end of the course, the students will be asked to complete a reflective assessment where they will be demonstrating their awareness of the areas focused on throughout the course. This will be in the form of a text analysis.
