This module is an optional extension to the Erasmus+ ROCKET Teacher Training (Core). In the core module, participants acquired general knowledge on the concept of Critical Virtual Exchange (CVE), addressed issues around Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and experienced the effective use of Role-Playing Game methods (RPG) in an online scenario while viewing Conflict Transformation (CT) in everyday interactions. This extension module offers participants the opportunity to further their understanding on role-playing games (RPG), discussing their application, design and facilitation in an educational setting. The teacher training is aligned to the ROCKET project which is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Cooperation Partnerships program. Conceived by the universities of Göttingen, Groningen and Uppsala, it seeks to develop a working concept for Critical Virtual Exchange which implements Role-Playing Games and Conflict Transformation.

Criteria

The ROCKET Teacher Training implements the format of a Virtual Exchange, combining asynchronous and synchronous sessions and highlighting interaction between participants. This extension module altogether includes a two-week asynchronous working phase, where participants are tasked to deepen their design and facilitation practice in creating transformative games for their educational contexts.

Participants will also take part in two synchronous session on role-playing games on the 31st of October and 10th of November 2025. Additionally, participants who take part in any of the 4 extension options of this training, will engage in one synchronous outro session on the 14th November 2025.

The extension targets interested teachers, lecturers, curriculum developers across disciplines in higher education.

The time investment for participants who successfully complete this extension (incl. outro session) training is approximately 14 hours.

Participants complete their tasks – often with a focus on interaction and collaboration – by e.g. critically engaging in literature, using digital tools to reflect on concepts and learn about different perspectives (e.g. discussion boards, word clouds, padlet). Participants receive feedback on completed tasks. Participants are required to complete the extension task(s) during the training in order to receive the digital badge for the extension module. This extension badge is only valid in the case that participants successfully completed the core module of the ROCKET Teacher Training.

Participants who completed this course extension will primarily learn to

  • discuss educational applications of RPGs
  • design and facilitate transformative role-playing games for conflict transformation.

They will build on the knowledge that was acquired throughout the core training modules.
