This online training explores new avenues of virtual collaboration with administrative staff from different (international) universities in a Virtual Exchange format. Participants address issues of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and experience the effective use of role-playing methods in an online scenario. Participants are taught to recognise different concepts related to conflict transformation as key drivers in everyday interactions and acquire tools on how to make their classroom more inclusive. The Admin Staff Training is aligned with the ROCKET project which is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Cooperation Partnerships program. Conceived by the universities of Göttingen, Groningen and Uppsala, it seeks to develop a working concept for Critical Virtual Exchange which implements Role-Playing Games and Conflict Transformation.

The University of Göttingen is an internationally renowned research university. Founded in 1737 in the Age of Enlightenment, the University is committed to the values of social responsibility of science, democracy, tolerance and justice. It offers a comprehensive range of subjects across 13 faculties: in the natural sciences, humanities, social sciences and medicine. With about 30,000 students and more than 210 degree programmes, the University is one of the largest in Germany.

Criteria

The ROCKET Admin Staff Training targets interested university employees who work with students, teachers, and other staff members in an administrative capacity, e.g. related to human resources, accessibility or student health. It implements the format of a Virtual Exchange, combining asynchronous and synchronous sessions and highlighting the interaction between participants. The training takes place over the course of approx. 6 weeks and includes 4 interactive online sessions.

Throughout the training, participants complete different tasks – often with a focus on interaction and collaboration. These tasks include e.g. online conversations in discussion forums, on Padlet, and over Zoom, journaling exercises, and short role-playing scenarios. Participants receive feedback on completed tasks. In a final (asynchronous) presentation, participants critically apply their learnings to their own professional context.

The ROCKET Admin Staff Training pilot introduces participants to different concepts, leading to a diverse set of learning outcomes. As such, participants will learn to:

  • identify underlying positions, interests, feelings, and needs in a conflict;
  • practice different conflict styles through short role-playing scenarios;
  • discuss intersectional factors related to DEI in the university context;
  • map the support resources available at their institution;
  • engage in conflict situations nonviolently through I-statements.

The time investment for participants who successfully complete the training is approximately 10 hours.
