Participating in Dialogue

The Civics Credentialing System provides a system of credentials that represent pro-democracy commitments, education, actions, and recognition.

Learning Objectives

Develop and enhance communication through fundamental dialogue skills across diverse perspectives.

1. Understand and Practice Essential Dialogue Skills:
   Explore the meaning of dialogue, learn key listening and speaking skills (including active listening, perspective-taking, and communicating with empathy), and practice applying these skills in structured activities and discussions.
2. Address Barriers and Misconceptions about Dialogue:
   Examine common critiques and concerns about dialogue, develop strategies for overcoming resistance, and foster a more receptive environment for engaging across differences.
3. Integrate Dialogue Principles into Personal Practice:
   Participants will reflect on their personal communication styles, connect dialogue skills to their values, and identify opportunities to apply these skills in real-world situations.

Learning Experience, Activities

This interactive workshop provides a foundational understanding of dialogue and deep listening across differences. Participants will learn essential communication skills, practice applying them in real-time, and explore strategies for navigating challenging conversations. Participants will leave feeling equipped and inspired to engage in constructive dialogue in your work and everyday life.

Assessment

Rather than a summative assessment, this course concludes with a full-length practice dialogue session designed as an experiential learning component.
