MOOC Completion - Sustainable Development in Business

The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) is an intergovernmental organisation created by Commonwealth Heads of Government in 1987 to promote the development and sharing of open learning and distance education knowledge, resources and technologies.

Course Description

This course aims to introduce learners to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and discuss issues related to sustainable development in business. We link the SDG concepts to the COVID-19 pandemic and encourage learners through forums to share their personal and country experiences with us. We also discuss post-COVID-19 issues, introduce strategies to initiate the conversation about how to build a robust, resilient and even more sustainable world.

Learning Outcomes of this Course

On completion of this course, learners are expected to be able to:

1. Analyse the interrelationships between the SDGs.
2. Discuss the complexities and challenges of achieving the SDGs.
3. Explain the issues relating to the development of a sustainable corporate strategy.
4. Identify the four different perspectives pertaining to the traditional Balanced Scorecard.
5. Discuss the issues which are integrated in the sustainable balanced scored.
6. Define a sustainable business model.
7. Explain the concepts of economic growth, sustainable development and sustainable trade.
8. Discuss about the case for sustainable trade and its drivers.
9. Identify opportunities related to sustainable trade in different sectors such as agriculture and tourism
10. Apply the concepts of sustainable production and consumption.
11. Apply sustainability to different business areas including infrastructure, waste management and tourism.
12. Explain the concept of industrial symbiosis.

To be eligible for both the certificate of completion and this digital badge, learners must:

1. Participating in at least one Forum discussion throughout the course; and

2. Completing the Quiz Questions for each unit.
