The Global Experience Bursary is in place to support undergraduate and postgraduate students in undertaking short-term study, research, work or volunteering opportunities abroad over the summer. Criteria:

  • Taken part in a Global Experience of a minimum of 5 days either abroad or virtually
  • Been a successful recipient of the Global Experience Bursary, offered by the University of Westminster for students who want to develop their cultural competencies during their studies by taking part in a short-term Global Experience.
  • Completed both the Global Experience Bursary Pre departure Skills Reflection Workbook and Post Return Skills Reflection Workbook. These workbooks are designed specifically for students to reflect on and articulate their development during the Global Experience in the following skills:

  • Cultural awareness - your understanding of the differences between yourself and people from other countries or other backgrounds, especially differences in attitudes and values.

  • Self-awareness - the quality of being conscious of one's own feelings, character, etc.

  • Adaptability – your ability to change your ideas or behaviour in order to deal with new situations successfully.

  • Empathy - the ability to share another person's feelings and emotions as if they were your own.

  • Confidence - feeling sure about your abilities, qualities, or ideas.

  • Problem solving - the act or process of finding solutions to problems, especially by using a scientific or analytical approach.

  • Independence - being able to manage yourself: taking initiative when required, knowing what needs to be done and doing it and taking ownership when things go wrong.
