Based on the IDB’s Social Impact Assesment: Guidance Note and three case studies, the course offers self-guided activities to evaluate if the social impacts have been identified correctly.

  • Recognize the use and value of SIA in development programs preparation and implementation
  • Interpret project-related challenges, risks, and opportunities while implementing the ten elements of an SIA
  • Evaluate application and understanding of SIA to improve the project lifecycle
  • Analyze the application of the ten elements of SIA and examine if they have been correctly implemented

Learning experience and activities

Self-paced virtual learning that includes:

  • Reviewing documents, audios, infographics, and videos on the ten elements of an SIA
  • Answering to:
    • Self-assessment questions at the end of each topic and correction feedback after two attempts
    • Two practical cases, with six questions each, evaluated
    • An evaluated case study type "choose your own adventure" in which the participant makes decisions that lead to a result
    • Final questionnaire to evaluate the acquired knowledge

Course content

The Course has four modules that cover the following topics:

  • Module 1. Initial knowledge questionnaire
  • Module 2: Introduction and explanation of the ten elements of the HIA
    • Element 1: Clarifying the legal and regulatory foundations
    • Element 2: Assessing the social context
    • Element 3: Stakeholder analysis and meaningful participation
    • Element 4: Identifying benefits and opportunities
    • Element 5: Identifying Risk
    • Element 6: Defining indicators, baseline, and data collection methodology
    • Element 7: Social aspects in the design and execution of the project
    • Element 8: Production and dissemination of documents
    • Element 9: Incorporating social aspects in the project management system
    • Element 10: Monitoring, adaptive management, and evaluation
  • Module 3. Evaluation
    • Case study: agricultural sector productivity project
    • Case study: rural transport efficiency project
    • Case study: EIS in a flood risk reduction program
  • Module 4. Final knowledge questionnaire 

Assessment

This badge has been awarded after successfully completing:

  • Two case studies, with six questions each, evaluated
  • A case study in a "choose your own adventure" format, where the participant makes decisions that lead to a final result

Evaluation criteria

  • Two attempts to pass each of the three case studies. The highest grade obtained is computed
  • Minimum average score required: 70/100
  • All activities have the same weight
  • The initial and final questionnaire are not evaluated but are used to determine how much the participant learned during the course
