Earning Criteria:

  • Earner has Read and commited to the mentor agreement: The mentor has thoroughly read and understand a formal document that outlines the expectations, responsibilities, and ethical guidelines of the mentorship role. This included understanding the goals for the trainee, confidentiality protocols, communication frequency, and the support structure provided by the institution. By signing or otherwise formally committing, the mentor agreed to uphold these standards.

  • Earner has Complete trainee induction with their mentee: This stablished the mentor-mentee relationship. It involved setting initial goals, discussing the trainee's prior experience and learning objectives, and creating a working plan for the mentee to learn the institution's processes and procedures. This ensured both parties are aligned and have a clear understanding of the expectations and journey ahead

  • Earner has Completed the mentor licence to observe: The mentor to completed specific training to conduct observations of the mentee. This training is not just about watching someone teach; it's about learning how to provide constructive, evidence-based feedback. The training covered observation frameworks, effective note-taking, and methods for conducting post-observation discussions that promote reflection and professional growth, rather than simply pointing out flaws.
  • Earner has Completed a joint observation with a member of the quality team: The mentor has co-observe the mentee's teaching with a senior or designated member of the quality assurance or professional development team. This allowed the mentor to be moderated, ensuring their observation and feedback skills are optimal.

  • Earner has Completed the Open University Module ‘Learning to Teach: Mentoring and Tutoring Student Teachers’: This required the mentor to undertake formal, theoretical training, providing a robust academic foundation for their practice. It covers key pedagogical theories, the psychology of learning, different models of mentorship, and strategies for supporting a trainee through various challenges. It created a deep, evidence-based understanding of effective mentoring practice.
