Upon completion, participants are able to recognize the importance of E&S risk management for financial institutions. Criteria

Learning objectives

This digital credential certifies that its holder has developed the skills to:

  • Explain the importance of assessing the E&S risks of a financial intermediary’s (FI) credit activity.
  • Describe the components and processes of an ESMS within an FI’s operations.
  • Identify the ESMS requirements needed to integrate E&S guidelines into daily operations.
  • Identify the business opportunities that arise from implementing an ESMS.

Learning experience and activities

Self-paced online learning, including:

  • Three modules with multimedia presentations, readings, reflection forums, and self-assessment tests that describe an ESMS and its implementation.
  • A multiple-choice assessment for each module.
  • An evaluation module using a choose-your-own-adventure structure, where participants explore four key roles in the design and implementation of an ESMS: client, account executive, E&S specialist, and commercial manager.

Course content

This course has four modules covering the following topics:

  • Motivation for its development and implementation.
  • Definition of an ESMS.
  • Coexistence of an ESMS with other management systems.
  • Introductory context to ESMS.ç
  • What E&S risks are and how they affect financial institutions.
  • Role of the financial institution in E&S risk mitigation.
  • Description of the different components of an ESMS.
  • Criteria for designing an ESMS.
  • Continuous improvement mechanisms.
  • Access to international funding.
  • ESMS action plans and new business generation.
  • How sustainable financial products and an ESMS complement each other.
  • Barriers and challenges in developing, implementing, and maintaining an ESMS (impact vs. risk identification, greenwashing).

Learning assessment

Those who obtain the credential have completed at least the following activities:

  1. Read the course content.
  2. Review interactive presentations.
  3. Participate in the reflection forums.
  4. Complete three quiz-type exercises (one per course module) with:

    • An average score of 70% or higher.
    • Two attempts allowed per quiz, with the highest score counted.
    • Equal weight assigned to all modules when calculating the average grade.
  5. Complete the questionnaires for each of the four profiles (client, account executive, E&S specialist, and commercial manager) correctly, with no limit on the number of attempts.

This course takes about 19 hours to complete.
