Expires: 13 Jan 2031

This programme seeks to build upon the ‘First Steps into Management’ which was introduced in UCC in 2017. It is intended that the ‘Continuing Steps into Management’ will bridge a gap for staff between the ‘First Steps’ programme and our more advanced Leadership programmes. Not only will the target audience include graduates of the ‘First Steps programme, but also staff who are currently or who aspire to be team leaders and managers. They will have already engaged in relevant development workshops/programmes & have previously undertaken an MBTI workshop & completed the questionnaire. All the modules will take place face to face and will be highly participatory including small group discussions, completion of self-assessments, reflective journaling and scenario-based activities. Four main topics will be covered: 1. UCC Values & Culture 2. Dealing Effectively with Change & Conflict 3. Team Ownership / Individual Responsibility / Accountability 4. Clear Communications

University College Cork (UCC) is a leading global university based in Cork City, Ireland. The Office of the Vice-President for Teaching & Learning at UCC promotes and supports excellence in teaching and to increase the quality of education at UCC.

Criteria

  • Reflect on our own value system, our current team values and how these align with the UCC core values, developing a core appreciation of the importance of a values-based culture together with an understanding of the UCC values.
  • Examine the impact of different and conflicting values at work and possible barriers and enablers to a strong values based culture, exploring in practical terms how a team leader can both develop and embed strong team-based values-driven culture and consider ways in which team based values can endure and remain strong in the context of change and changing team personnel.
  • In the context of change, consider the sources of conflict, how individuals both react to and respond to conflict and what approaches a team leader can take to effectively manage change to minimize conflict amongst team members and colleagues. If conflict does arise, examine approaches to adopt and to identify sources of support to build resilience and self-care.
  • Define what team ownership, individual responsibility and accountability are and recognise the importance of taking responsibility for our actions, being accountable for our behavior and examining our modes of communication and interaction all under the umbrella of psychological safety.
  • Examine how effective communications works, choosing appropriate media to communicate effectively and examine the evolution of one’s own self-awareness through the programme from week 1 to 4 together with the identification of practical learning, new skills, approaches and thinking, and how this has been applied in the workplace.
