About Principles for Trusted Elections

Principles for Trusted Elections is a cross-partisan initiative led by Team Democracy in collaboration with The Carter Center and The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation.

The Principles are built around five pillars that help ensure confidence in our elections:

  • Honest Process — impartial, lawful elections with equal access for all eligible voters
  • Nonviolent Campaign — campaigns free from threats, intimidation, and violence
  • Secure Voting — every eligible vote counted, with safeguards to ensure integrity
  • Responsible Oversight — transparent administration with clear roles and accountability
  • Trusted Outcomes — legal dispute resolution and peaceful transfer of power

Signing Statement:

As part of the Fourth Estate, journalists are by definition pro-democracy supporters of the Constitution, and should make their bias transparently clear in their work. Objectivity does not equate to neutrality; neutrality is not an option on questions of democracy and fair elections.
