This badge certifies the successful participation in the HERawS Summer School on Critical Raw Materials and Sustainable Mining, held from June 30 to July 4, 2025, in Postojna, Slovenia, as part of the HERawS Erasmus+ Project. Throughout this intensive, hands-on program, learners explored the critical role of raw materials in enabling sustainable solutions for the twin green and digital transitions. The week combined expert-led sessions, field visits, and team projects addressing the technical, environmental, economic, and societal dimensions of critical raw materials (CRMs). Participants also visited the Idrija Mercury Mine to explore real-world environmental legacies and participated in a final team project, presenting strategies for sustainable CRM management.

Criteria

This badge is awarded to participants who:

Successfully completed the HERawS Summer School on Critical Raw Materials and Sustainable Mining (June 30 – July 4, 2025, Postojna, Slovenia), organized under the HERawS Erasmus+ Project

Took part in expert-led sessions covering key topics:

  • Critical Raw Materials (CRMs): their role in the green and digital transitions, and their use in technologies such as batteries, wind turbines, and electronics
  • Hydrogen in the Green Transition: production, storage, and use; challenges in scaling; and opportunities for innovation across sectors
  • Economic Evaluation of Mineral Resources: assessment of national mineral wealth, by-products, and recycling strategies
  • Environmental Impacts of Raw Material Extraction: effects on water, air, soil, land, and climate; with a focus on risk assessment and EIA methods
  • Biological Reclamation and Site Restoration: planning post-mining restoration using ecological approaches
  • Ecosystem Services and Mining: impacts of extraction on ecosystem functions and services

Participated in a field visit to the Idrija Mercury Mine, analyzing environmental legacies and reclamation practices

Worked in interdisciplinary teams to design a hydrogen-based solution targeting a sustainability challenge in industry, research, policy, or business, integrating CRM-related insights

Presented and defended their project before an expert jury, demonstrating their ability to connect technical, economic, environmental, and societal aspects of sustainable resource management
