Understanding Academic Integrity

Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is a Higher Education technological university based in the west and northwest of Ireland.

This module aims to outline why studying with academic integrity is emphasised so greatly within universities. The module introduces the student to the very fundamentals of academic integrity and details several tools, techniques and strategies that will help them navigate the academic integrity challenges that are commonly faced studying in university.

All this is done within an Irish context, and covers aspects of academic integrity such as understanding how to give due credit to others’ work, how to deal with time pressure, how to study collaboratively with academic integrity, how to evaluate information and how to use generative AI.

After completing this module, the user will be able to:

• Recognise the values and apply the principles of academic integrity
• Deploy learning strategies that help you study with academic integrity
• Outline the importance of citing and referencing others’ work with regard to academic integrity
• Use media literacy skills to differentiate between good quality information and those sources of lesser standing
• Identity the opportunity and challenges that Generative AI presents in an academic integrity context

The module is made up of five sessions. Each session has a 20–25 minute interactive presentation at its core. This is something the user can complete in their own time at their own pace.

Each presentation is followed by a 10-question knowledge check where the user can see how well they understood the objectives of the session.

Alongside these core elements of the module, several tools and supplementary resources are made available related to the session at hand. These should help the user further their learning on any of the topics under discussion.

The user can achieve a digital badge for the course by achieving a score of 80% across all five knowledge checks.
