The University of Oulu is an international science university that creates new knowledge, well-being and innovations for the future through research and education. The University of Oulu, founded in 1958, is one of the largest and most multidisciplinary universities in Finland.

Criteria

The badge recipient has participated in the Sustainability in the ICT Sector training organised by the University of Oulu.

This training gave a holistic view of the topic of sustainability in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector. The training presented key sustainability concepts, principles and indicators for ICTs including UN SDGs, environmental, social and economic sustainability pillars, and their impacts.

Particular emphasis was on concrete sustainability theme within the environmental, social and economic sustainability pillars and their interrelations. Both ICT sector’s own sustainability impact and the impact from the use of ICT solutions was considered. Practical examples were provided about concrete sustainability themes and how to address them in the day-to-day life in the ICT sector.

After attending the training, the student is familiar with the key sustainability principles in the ICT sector including environmental, social and economic sustainability pillars and their interrelations. The student knows key sustainability themes and potential sustainability impacts in the development of the ICT solutions and in their use. The student has gained understanding of the importance of sustainability and where to pay attention to in the everyday life regarding ICTs.

The training was delivered as an online course 24-31 March 2026 and included four hours of lectures. Competence was demonstrated through individual reflection assignments. The criteria for awarding the digital badge were participation in the lectures and successful completion of the assignments.

The training was jointly implemented by the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering and the Regional Innovative Education Solutions (AIKO) unit, the University of Oulu.
