I took a proactive approach to my role by actively creating opportunities for communication, engagement, and community-building rather than waiting for students to come forward.
One of my first initiatives was setting up a course-wide WhatsApp group chat to create an open and accessible communication space. Within this, I regularly encouraged students to share ideas, feedback, and concerns, making it clear that they could contribute either publicly or privately depending on their preference. I also helped to jointly organise weekly meet-ups at the IOE, which provided a consistent and informal space for students to connect. These sessions were designed to be inclusive and low-pressure, allowing students to engage socially and academically. I actively promoted these meet-ups and encouraged participation, helping to strengthen a sense of community within the cohort.
In addition, I put forward ideas for further engagement, such as organising a museum trip in East London, and I encouraged students to suggest similar initiatives. I also took the initiative to share advice on modules I had previously taken, offering guidance and practical support to help others navigate their studies. I also set up other events and final term catch-ups with teachers so that we, as a cohort, could spend time collectively with our teachers outside of the classroom. Beyond this, I regularly shared opportunities such as workshops, sustainability initiatives, and events, encouraging students to engage more widely with UCL and beyond. My work as a Sustainability Ambassador also allowed me to proactively introduce new areas of engagement, such as campaigns, blog content, and awareness activities. My approach was centred on actively reaching out, encouraging participation, and creating spaces where students felt comfortable contributing, rather than relying on passive engagement.

I formulated the Pub Quiz idea and posted it into the Announcement section of our WhatsApp groupchat on 20/11/25. I have a screenshot of this but cannot share it on this page as there is nowhere to do so. However, I can supply it if asked for later on. Also, I can quote it here as well:

"Hey everyone! We’re hoping to run a Pub Quiz in the last week of term (week beginning 08/12/25) and we’d love as many people as possible to join in. If you enjoy quizzes or just want to test your knowledge, you’re more than welcome. Although we’re calling it a “pub quiz,” there’s absolutely no expectation to drink.  Everyone is welcome!

We’re currently trying to find the best day for most people, so we’ll be putting out a poll where you can vote for the days you’re available. You can select multiple options if they work for you, we’re just trying to get a sense of numbers for each day. The day with the most votes will be the one we go with.

We’ll choose the pub closer to the time once the date is confirmed, so please make sure to vote for the day(s) you’d prefer!"
