Badge Finland -webinar: Open Badge Driven Teacher ICT Skills Validation in Rwanda (in English)
Open Badge Driven Teacher ICT Skills Validation in Rwanda
The use of Open Badges in the professional development of teachers is an extension to traditional teacher professional development initiatives. Existing teacher ICT Skills frameworks set a clear baseline for developing skills criteria and professional development goals for teachers globally. At the same time, Badges support self-directed learning and micro certification through validation of existing skills.
The objective of this research was to test the badging approach and further examine the triggers that lead to learning/teachers motivation to apply for badges. The research was conducted during a project targeting a group of teachers in Rwanda during the spring of 2020. The research covered a badge-driven teacher professional development process that focused on skills validation. Quantitative data collection was undertaken through surveys prior, during and after the project. The results show a positive perception of a badge driven professional development programme by the participants.
Pete Stockley and Satu Järvinen will present the results of this research.
This webinar is held by the Badge Finland network. Please register below or send an email to contact@openbadgefactory.com to sign up.
Webinar is on Thursday December 10th at 12 pm GMT (14.00-15.00 EET).

Getting the most out of Open Badges at Newcastle University
Open Badges have been used at Newcastle University since 2015 when they were first awarded to students completing the ncl+ award. This well-established award recognises the skills students develop when taking part in a range of extracurricular activities during their time at University.
Since then the number of Open Badges awarded across the University has been steadily increasing with a variety of subject areas introducing badges. These new badges recognise a range of skills and achievements, from Safety in the Laboratory to completing Enterprise Challenges.
Claire Burnham, Learning Enhancement and Technology Co-ordinator, will cover the range of badges that have been introduced, how they worked to get the design right, the exploration of the best methods of evaluation (still a work in progress) and the resulting governance processes aimed to ensure controlled, scalable growth of digital credentialing. She will finish by looking to the future to see where Open Badges might end up at Newcastle University.

Using Open Badges for recognition of participation in Virtual Exchange: the Erasmus Plus Experience, Virtual Exchange experience
Teresa MacKinnon, Associate Professor from University of Warwick, UK, will present a case study drawn from the experiences of using Open Badge Factory to create an ecosystem of badges for virtual exchange.
Virtual exchange is technology-enabled people-to-people dialogues sustained over a period of time. It:
uses new media platforms to enable deep, interactive social learning
was developed over 30 years from experience in the field of educational exchange and study abroad
makes it possible for every young person to have meaningful, transnational and intercultural experiences
prepares, deepens, and extends physical exchanges
This European Commission initiative brings together multiple partners to expand the reach and scope of the Erasmus+ programme, engaging at least 17,000 young people. It provides an accessible, innovative way for young people in Europe and the Southern Mediterranean to engage in meaningful intercultural experiences online, as part of their formal or non-formal education. Open Badges are used to promote visibility and recognition of the engagement in Virtual Exchange opportunities we offer. The digital nature of this form of recognition reflects and enhances the digital skills acquired through this initiative.

Open Badges bring buzz to developing employees’ competencies
Minna Haasio, Matti Mäkelä, Riikka Muurimäki and Kimmo Puumala will present how they’re using Open Badges to update the digital skills of all employees of Opinlakeus, Sedu and SeAMK.
Opinlakeus network, that operates in Seinäjoki and its surrounding municipalities, organises further education in several different ways to the employees of the educational institutions operating in the area. Their aim is to achieve a certain level regarding the digital skills of the entire staff. Since the staff’s participation to certain training went down every year, they decided to try a completely new way to offer further education. They designed and implemented a Moodle based online course and after completing it, the participant receives an Open Badge. They wanted to link issued badges to be a part of the whole organisation’s development process at the same time.
Sedu and SeAMK are the first organisations where Open Badges have been used in the Opinlakeus network. These two organisations have also been organising digital courses for the whole network. It’s been possible to notice that teacher’s own experiences in earning an Open Badge bring transfer of learning to the implementation of teaching. A well-functioning model can be transferred to all educational organisations of the network.
Case - EHYT Finnish Association for Substance Abuse Prevention
Open Badges in Finnish Association for Substance Abuse Prevention
Mika Piipponen, Network Coordinator , from EHYT ry presents how they use Open Badges in volunteer work and educational activities. He explains what is the role of Open Badges in developing the educator network and what kind of challenges and possibilities have arisen because of their usage of badges. He also goes through how they plan to use badges in Vahvistamo’s activities (Vahvistamo is a Center of Expertise for the youth).
Satu Järvinen, CEO, from SkillSafari will present how they are using Open Badges to create more successful careers.
Self directed learning (SDL) is a topic that is discussed among learning developers globally. It’s widely believed that when using SDL, learners pick up skills that will help them succeed in life on top of the subject matter.
Open Badges are often used as a proof of competence at the end of a learning experience, like a course. SkillSafari uses badges to measure competence without offering study content, turning it into a tool for recognition of prior learning. Experience has shown that when the challenge level of the work required to earn a badge is set to the right level, learners pick interest in studying the contents independently in order to get the badge. This transforms badges to tools for self directed learning.
This customer case will be presented by Ian Gardner from BMI Healthcare. Ian will present how BMI Healthcare tries to expose internal expertise via an Open Badge directory. The project has started to develop a better understanding of expertise and ending silos between teams and locations.

OBF’s Eric Rousselle explains in this webinar what GDPR means when it comes to our platforms, what changes, what doesn’t and what you as a customer or a user need to do.
Skills and knowledge from hobbies - how to make them recognised in schools and working places
Work-based learning that is achieved outside of school and recognition of knowledge occupy educational institutions. Usually these are related to companies but nowadays knowledge and competencies gained from projects and voluntary work are also recognised.
This is also something The Guides and Scouts of Finland as a voluntary organisation have been emphasising. They try to promote the versatile opportunities of scouting in different occasions and tell educational institutes and working places about the projects and tasks scouts do.
In this presentation Johanna Heinonen (Senior Lecturer at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences) will present The Guides and Scouts of Finland and give examples of the versatile knowledge and skills scouts may collect from their hobby. They will also present ways how they’ve promoted these skills in their network and give insights of the badges and projects involving recognition of learning in scouting. Results and feedback are presented in the end as well as some future steps.
We will release a brand new and awaited feature called endorsement in early 2018. Eric Rousselle from Open Badge Factory will tell more about this new feature and how it will be possible for organisations using Open Badge Factory to endorse badges created by other organisations. This again will create even more value to Open Badges issued with Open Badge Factory.
Case - Enabling a regional Open Badges ecosystem in Ontario
CEO David Porter and Program Manager Joanne Kehoe are from eCampusOntario, an edtech centre of excellence for the 45 publicly funded colleges and universities in Canada’s largest province. They are working with Don Presant, President of CanCred.ca, Canada’s Open Badges solution built on Open Badge Factory technology. David, Joanne and Don will describe the province-wide Sandbox they are building for colleges and universities to actively explore Open Badges in a collaborative framework.
Participating institutions are using Open Badges as an alternative way to recognise learning in areas such as informal co-curricular learning, institutional learning outcomes, employability skills and continuing education (CE). The institutions are sending badges to a dedicated eCampusOntario Open Badge Passport, created to enable an Open Badges ecosystem for the province.
You can find the presentation slides for part 1 here and for part 2 here.
Atish Gonsalves, Global Learning & Innovation Director, from Humanitarian Leadership Academy and Don Presant, President & Executive Producer, from Learning Agents will tell about the Humanitarian Passport Initiative and how digital Open Badges are being used across the humanitarian sector. Organisations from this sector can issue Open Badges for their interest groups through online learning platform Kaya, through other completed training or through passing formal professional development assessments.

Eric will tell more about the updated standard and what it includes.
