Open Badge Factory service (“Service”) customer register
The purpose of the use of the register information is to maintain and handle the relationship between the Service Provider and Service user (“Customer”) and to plan and develop the business activity of the Service Provider through various research methods. The information is used for distribution of information to the customers and possibly for direct marketing if allowed by law.

The information of the register is received directly from the Customer or from the Customer’s admin user in the following situations:
The Service Provider does not per se disclose information to third parties. Information can be disclosed for research and marketing purposes if the Customer gives permission when asked separately. Information is disclosed also to representatives of law enforcement for, for example, criminal investigation when and in the scope required by Finnish law in effect at any given time.
The personal information saved in the register is collected into joint databases which are secured with firewalls and other appropriate technical measures.
All persons handling the register have personal access rights (username, password and access level information) to the register issued by the register owner. Only persons who need the said information to carry out their work assignments can access the Customer’s personal data. These persons include the Service Provider’s customer service personnel and the technical administrators of the Service.
According to the Law on Personal Data (Henkilötietolaki 523/1999) section 26, a person has the right to check information concerning her/himself in the register. The inspection request must be sent in writing and signed to the register contact person or it can be presented in person in the above mentioned address. A person in the register has the right to demand an erroneous piece of information about her/himself in the register to be corrected.
Enterprise level serves especially big businesses, universities and associations that have multiple sub-organisations and different user groups to manage. This service level is meant for organisations that want more precise tools for managing users and badges, the possibility to create an unlimited amount of Open Badges and issue large quantities of badges as well as the possibility to advertise their badges in Open Badge Passport now and in the future. Enterprise customers have also the possibility to install their own dedicated Open Badge Passport and start using Badge Record Storage.
What do Enterprise customers get?
Organisation does a lot of work when they design valuable and interesting badges for their employees, customers, members, students etc. and issues badges through a chosen platform. Have you ever wondered what happens to your organisation’s badges if you ever decide to stop using the platform? What if the badges stop working? Will all of the hard work go to waste?
Open Badge Factory has developed a separate service called Badge Record Storage to which badges created and issued in Open Badge Factory will be saved. They are available for use even if you decide to stop using Open Badge Factory. OBF keeps Open Badges saved for two (2) years after an organisation has stopped using the service but if your organisation is using Badge Record Storage, the data of your badges can still be used through your own server. With this additional service, we want to guarantee our customers that the work they have done won’t go to waste.
Does your organisation operate in a sector where issued badges will at least partly be closed so that they can’t be shared outside to social media platforms? Or do you operate in a sector or ecosystem that wants to gather professionals from the same field to one place so that it is easy to find the right experts through issued badges? The idea behind badges is familiar from military and scouting organisations. An Open Badge is a digital picture, which contains metadata. Yes. The badges created and issued by Open Badge Factory fully align with the Open Badges Infrastructure (OBI) developed by Mozilla.

With Open Badge Factory you can avoid the fragmentation of your badge system. You can manage all your badges in one place but issue them on other platforms. Using Open Badge Factory’s issuer plugins, you will be able to issue your badges in Moodle and other systems such as Totara LMS, Blackboard, Optima, WordPress, Canvas LMS, LearnDash, Brightspace and Mahara.
When you issue a badge from Moodle or another system using an OBF issuing plugin, your badges will be safely stored and hosted in Open Badge Factory. They will remain functional and valid even if your organisation decides to replace your current learning platform, CRM or HR-system with a new one.
Open Badge Factory also provides tools and features which are missing from Moodle and other learning platforms. These tools will help you to create and manage a consistent badge system. The list of tools is a long one, but here are some examples: badge pathways with milestone badges, a comprehensive reporting system, tools for managing badge expiry and a set of roles for managing badge design and issue as a collaborative workflow. Client applications, also known as plugins, have been developed for Moodle, Totara LMS, Blackboard, WordPress, Canvas LMS, LearnDash, Brightspace and Optima learning platforms as well as Mahara e-Portfolio. More plugins are coming in the future. These plugins make it possible to issue badges remotely but continue to manage them centrally in Open Badge Factory. OBF plugins are open source and can be found in our GitHub repository.

We offer 3 service levels; Free, Basic and Premium.
At the Free level you can access OBF’s basic features and plugins, but you can only create two badges. This service level is convenient for developers who need to test their plugins or for organisations, which need to issue only one or two badges.
The Basic level gives access to most features although some are blocked, such as milestone badges. You can have maximum number of ten different badges at a time. This service level is suitable for organisations with small badge systems.
Premium level customers have full access to all of OBF’s features. You can have unlimited number of badges, although issuing is limited to 15 000 earners/year (see below). This level is suitable for larger organisations, which want to create badge pathways and develop large, structured badge systems.
Notice that a maximum number of issued badges is limited to 15 000 badges/year in all service levels. If your organisation plans to issue more that 15 000 badges/year, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Premium level customers also have the option of adding sub-organisations, such as faculties, departments or subsidiaries. Each sub-organisation can have its own issuer name and URL and can generate separate reports. There is a modest additional subscription cost for each sub-organisation.
Yes. The admin user of your OBF environment can change the service level subscription.
After signing up, you will be set up with an environment at the Premium level. After the trial period you will have the option to purchase a permanent subscription at either the Premium or Basic level. If you choose neither, you will become a Free level customer. You will also be able to delete your environment and deactivate your account with Open Badge Factory.
This text will appear as a footnote in a badge criteria page, if we can verify that at least the issuer organisation OBF environment’s admin belongs to the organisation she or he is representing. Becoming a verified issuer is possible only at the Premium level, it is not a default status. The admin user must apply for verification and comply with our verification process.

When an organisation applies for an administrator account in Open Badge Factory, we verify that it is a valid organisation and that the person getting a user account belongs to the organisation he or she claims to belong to. You can establish who in your organisation is authorised to design and create badges and who has rights to issue your badges. You can manage all your badges in one place, but issue them in different systems (LMS, CRM, HR systems, etc.) using Open Badge Factory’s issuer plugins. Open Badge Passport is also a community, which supports online social interaction between badge earners, organisations and communities of practice.
Are Open Badges needed in the academic world where expertise is displayed via official certificates and degrees? This question can be answered with a counter-question: Do degrees based on courses tell you enough about the actual expertise of students?
Open Badges do not compete with official certifications but rather complement them. Badges enable opening up the content of courses and displaying the expertise acquired during studies better. This improves the applicants’ chances on the job market. Expertise acquired during formal education is officially recognised but people learn many other things at school. Open Badges enable recognising and acknowledging a person’s soft skills, such as social, team work and mediation skills, acquired via positions of responsibility, club activities and other activities at school.

Discendum Oy (later referred to as Service Provider) is committed to protect the user’s privacy and offer its users a safe environment to manage their Open Badges. This disclosure on the Protection of Privacy is valid in the Open Badge Factory service and covers information gathering and usage.
When a user registers her/himself in the Open Badge Factory service and takes the service into use, s/he is asked to provide personal information. The Service Provider will not disclose any personal information of a user to another person or organization without a written consent of the user in question unless this is allowed or required by the Finnish law.
A cookie is a document which the web service saves into the user’s computer. Cookies are not software, spyware or viruses and they cannot execute functions by themselves.
Only the username, which each user can define her/himself, is displayed to another users in the Open Badge Factory.
The Service Provider can gather information about the usage of the service for statistic purposes. This information does not target any individual user.
The Service Provider will strive to ensure that no personal user data stored disappears, no data is used for wrong purposes and that no one can access or change the data without authorization.
The users are asked not to disclose their username or password to anyone other than the Service Provider in a situation where help is asked of the Service Provider.
The Service Provider will make small adjustments to this Protection of privacy document taking the changes made in the service and the feedback received from users into consideration. Thus the Service Provider suggests that the user returns to examine the Protection of privacy document on a regular basis.
If you have questions regarding this disclosure or you believe that the Service Provider has not abided by the above mentioned rules, you are advised to contact the Service Provider.
The User promises that the information the User provides or provided in connection with registration to, and use of the Service is true and accurate. The use of the Service requires a username and a personal password or other user identification method approved by the Service Provider (hereinafter referred to as User ID). Unless otherwise agreed, the User ID requires valid email address of the User for generating the username.
The User must keep the password required for the use of the Service secret and not disclose it to anyone else. Users may not assign or transfer their User IDs to a third party and may not allow a third party use the Service with the User ID. If a third party has obtained User’s password or the User has a reason to believe that a third party has obtained its password, the User must immediately inform the Service Provider. The User is solely responsible for actions taken by using its User account until it has informed the Service Provider of the loss of the password and the Service Provider has had a reasonable time to prevent the use of the Service with the User ID.
The Service contains different User categories Free, Basic and Premium. The prices of User categories in force from time to time are specified in the Service website. Basic and Premium categories are provided subject to the payment of prices. User can purchase Premium and Basic Service levels during or after a 60-day free trial period. If the subscription and payment are made during the trial period, the remaining days of the trial period will be added to the subscription time purchased by User. The minimum subscription period for both Premium and Basic Service levels is one year.
Free and Basic Service levels can be upgraded anytime during a subscription period. For example, User can purchase a one-year subscription for Basic Service level and upgrade the Service level to Premium few months later if needed.
Downgrading a Service level is only possible after the current subscription period has expired. User can downgrade his/her subscription from Premium to Basic or Free and from Basic to Free. If there are more than 2 badges in the environment, User will have to select the badges he/she wish to preserve and delete the rest of the badges when downgrading to Free Service level. Similarly, when User has more than 10 badges and downgrades from Premium to Basic Service level. The badges that have been deleted will not be restorable even if User later upgrades his/her Service level back to Basic or Premium.
Payment shall be done at the time of purchase of the Service or when upgrading the Service level using the available payment methods. Accepted payment methods are specified in the Service web site.

The Service Provider shall own all rights, title and interest in and to the Service as well as any material in or provided through the Service, including any copyright, patent, trademark, design right, trade secret and any other intellectual property rights (hereinafter referred to as Intellectual Property Rights). The User shall not receive any ownership rights by using the Service or for example by downloading material from or submitting material to the Service. Unless expressly authorized by mandatory legislation, Service may not be copied, reproduced or distributed in any manner or medium, in whole or in part, without prior written consent of the Service Provider. All rights not expressly granted to the User herein are reserved by the Service Provider.
The materials and information and any Intellectual Property Rights related thereto which the User inserts into the Service (User Material) remain the property of the User or a third party.
The Service Provider is responsible for technical implementation and maintenance of the Service. The Service is still at its development stage which means that changes and breaks in service can occur. The Service Provider may suspend the Service when necessary for example for installation, amendment or maintenance work or if laws, regulations or authorities so require or if there are other justifiable reasons for suspension. The Service Provider aims to ensure that the suspension is as short as possible. The Service Provider will make an effort to inform Users a reasonable time in advance of substantial changes and breaks in service on the login page of the Service and in the Open Badge Factory discussion group. If Service is not available for Use for more than two (2) consecutive days, subscription fee or any part of it shall not be refunded but equivalent amount of days will be added to User’s subscription time as compensation. However, the Service Provider reserves the right to perform small updates without informing about it in advance. A back-up of the service content is made once a day. The back-up is made in case the service content needs to be restored due to, for example, a technical problem. However, individual User’s content is not restored, if it accidentally deletes its content. The Service provider has the right to terminate the Service at its sole discretion. The Service Provider aims to notify a reasonable time in advance about the termination of the Service.
The Service Provider is committed to repairing possible software faults affecting the quality of the Service according to the valid product development plan.
It is the responsibility of the User of the Service to make sure that he/she has the right to use the images, content and email addresses that he/she uses in issuing he/her own badges. User agrees not to use the Service in a manner or otherwise submit any material that violate any Intellectual Property Rights, privacy, publicity or any other rights of others; or would be illegal or violate good manner. The Service Provider is not responsible for possible violations of the Users.
User shall use the Service in a manner that does not cause harm to the Service Provider, other Users or third parties. If the Service Provider receives a notice claiming that the User has submitted afore described material, The Service Provider is entitled to remove such material, the User or User organization’s environment or prevent their use without notice.
The Service is provided on an “as-is” basis without warranties of any kind. The Service Provider does not warrant that the Service will function without interruptions or error-free. The Service Provider shall not be liable for the correctness, exhaustiveness or reliability of the information or other material presented on the Service nor for the content or other features of the products or services offered on or conveyed through the Service. THE SERVICE PROVIDER HEREBY DISCLAIMS ANY AND ALL EXPRESS, IMPLIED, AND STATUTORY WARRANTIES, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, NON-INFRINGEMENT, SATISFACTORY QUALITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TO THE FULL EXTENT SUCH WARRANTIES MAY BE DISCLAIMED BY LAW. THE SERVICE PROVIDER DISCLAIMS ANY AND ALL LIABILITY FOR THE ACTS, OMISSIONS AND CONDUCT OF ANY THIRD PARTIES IN CONNECTION WITH OR RELATED TO USER’S USE OF THE SERVICE.
The Service Provider shall not be liable for direct or indirect damages caused by a possible delay, a change or a loss of a service, product or material transferred through the Service. The Service provider is not liable for direct or indirect damages caused by interruptions and disturbances including loss or delay of data or changes in data due to technical defects or maintenance. Further, the Service Provider disclaims any liability for direct or indirect damages caused to the User by harmful programs (virus, worms etc.) or incorrect content in the Service, the Service provider bears no liability for damages caused by the User or by a third party.
The Service Provider is never liable for any indirect or unforeseeable damages caused to the User at any given circumstances.
User is entitled to stop using the Service and to delete their environment at any time. In this case, all content is deleted once and for all, but the badges issued before the deletion of the environment will be hosted for free for at least two (2) years.
When the term expires or if the Service is suspended or terminated for whatsoever reason, the Service Provider shall not return to the User any payments made.

This cool new feature makes it possible for OBF user organisations to endorse badges created by other OBF organisations as well as endorse single organisations.
Endorsement works so that an organisation asks other organisations to endorse them or their badges. The organisation giving endorsement has to be added to a partner network by the organisation asking for endorsement. The endorsing organisation can also endorse without the other organisation asking for it as long as they are added as a partner.
The possible endorsement will be visible in the badge’s information for the badge viewer.

Badge Finland network has gotten a logo and a brand! It’s possible to notice the shape of a snowflake with a modern twist in the logo and the clean colours also represent the beautiful country that is Finland.
Knowledge about Open Badges is spread across Finland with the help of Badge Finland network and it helps forwarding the implementation of the concept in all kinds of organisations. The network also has a big role in forwarding as well as supporting cooperation between different sectors.
The kickoff meeting of the Badge Finland network will be organised on Friday November 24 at 8.45-12.00 in MOW’s space in Helsinki. We hope you can join the awesome kickoff!
We organise two Open Badge online courses and one face-to-face training day for our customers and anyone interested this November. The other online course and the face-to-face training day are meant for Open Badge Beginners and they offer basic information regarding the concept and Open Badge Factory and Open Badge Passport platforms. The other online course is meant for Open Badge Experts and dives in a lot deeper and is more consultative. These courses are organised in Finnish.

They are working with Don Presant, President of CanCred.ca, Canada’s Open Badges solution built on Open Badge Factory technology. David, Joanne and Don will describe the province-wide Sandbox they are building for colleges and universities to actively explore Open Badges in a collaborative framework.

As the concept of Open Badges is spreading across the world, the standard has also been updated to version 2.0. We’re delighted to inform that our platforms Open Badge Factory (badge issuing platform) and Open Badge Passport (badge repository for users) will be updated to support the new standard on Friday June 16th at 8:00 am BST (03:00 am EDT, 10:00 am EEST).
In addition to supporting the new version of the standard, we have developed a new feature called multilingual badges that will be available after the update. This means that organisations can now create badges that support more than one language and badge viewers can read the badge information in different languages if available.
We have also done some minor bug fixes and improvements to both platforms and it will also be possible for Open Badge Passport users to start following other badge earners in the platform.

Summer is finally here and so are this year’s Badge Summit and ISTE Conference & Expo! Open Badge Factory and Open Badge Passport platforms will take part in both events.
Badge Summit will be held at ESC20 Training Center in San Antonio, Texas, on June 24. The aim of Badge Summit is to gather together different professionals and thinkers from K-12, Higher Education, Industry and Cultural institutions and elsewhere and link them with some of the most inspiring Open Badge thought leaders and service providers. It’s a day packed with interaction, networking, presentations, learning and sharing.
Open Badge Factory leader Eric Rousselle will take part in the Badge Issuing Platform Roundtables session as well as have a presentation later in the afternoon titled What Can I Do With My Badges? More information and tickets to the Badge Summit can be found here.
ISTE 2017 Conference and Expo will be held at Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas, on June 25-28. This massive event is a globally recognised happening and brings together different professionals and service providers working in education. Around 18,000 attendees take part each year.

Organisations using Open Badge Factory are now able to advertise their badges in Open Badge Passport by making them visible in Passport’s Gallery > Apply for a badge page. The meaning of this new feature is to give organisations a new tool for advertising badges and making them more visible. Also, badges are better available for users and interesting new paths will open for them. This new feature is a feature in the upcoming Enterprise level but can now be used in all service levels for free until the end of 2017.
Organisations can advertise their badges in two ways:
1) Advertising the badge in Open Badge Passport
2) Advertising badge applications in Open Badge Passport
The badge / badge application has to be ready for issuing / active so that it’s possible to advertise the badge / badge application in Open Badge Passport.

Welcome to our very first OBF Academy webinar of fall 2016! In this webinar, we will go through some of the most recent features that have been added to OBF.
The emphasis will be on badge applications and on the different ways on how to evaluate them (for example peer assessment). Badge applications feature is one of the most used feature in Open Badge Factory.
The 14th ePIC conference will be held in Bologna, Italy, at the beautiful Palazzo Gnudi on Oct. 26.-28.
Participants will hear interesting presentations about ePortfolios, Open Badges, Blockchains and much more. It is also possible to take part in different workshops at the conference.

Jenni Meriläinen, Adviser for Lahti University of Applied Sciences, will tell how Open Badges have been utilized as a new, more flexible and nuanced way of acknowledging the learning and skills of students and staff members. For students, Open Badges have been used mainly as a supplement to the existing credential structure to recognise student achievements in a more nuanced way and to signal finer-grained skills. Lahti UAS is also utilizing Open Badges as a way of promoting staff competence and professional development.
